Lent Opportunities for Families
Lent is the season during the church year in which we mindfully prepare to be Disciples of Christ. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday with a time of repentance and concludes on Easter Sunday celebrating Christ’ resurrection. At Severna Park UMC we have several ways that your family can grow in faith together during lent.
Ash Wednesday Worship is always a multi-sensory experience. The service is Wednesday, March 1st at Noon & 7:00 PM. At 7:00 nursery care will be available for babies and toddlers. Children are encouraged to go to worship where they will have an opportunity to confess in some tangible way (such as placing a rock at the foot of a cross or writing a confession on paper and placing the paper in a fire pit) and receive ashes. Children are often more comfortable with the idea of confession as they are frequently in the position to apologize for their mistakes. So this is a great way for children to connect their normal apologies with confessing to God. If you are unable to attend worship that day, stop by the church and receive ashes throughout the day. Also a home Ash Wednesday service is below for you to use as a family. (And remember the day before Ash Wednesday, enjoy a pancake feast! The scouts host one at the church.) This Lent our theme will be “Reading John for Dear Life.” Throughout this season we will study how Jesus is portrayed in the gospel of John in worship and small groups. A class for children will be on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30. Adult classes for young adult and not so young adults (you choose which one will fit you best!) will be held at the same time. Please sign up in fellowship hall or by emailing Erica so we can have enough snacks, crafts, and books.
A Spring Book Fair will be in fellowship hall for several Sundays in March. This is a great place to get resources to help your family celebrate Easter. Stop by a table to order books for your family.
Palm Sunday Worship is Sunday, April 9th. At all three services there will be a procession with palms. At 9:30 and 11:00 the children will process into the sanctuary with the palms celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early that Sunday to Sunday School. Children will come with their classes into the sanctuary and return to their classes to conclude Sunday School.
Holy Week is a wonderful time to spend some time as a family growing in faith. Below you will find a holy week devotion for you and your family. Take 15 minutes each day during this one week to prepare for Jesus’ resurrection. Family Holy Week Devotions
Maundy Thursday Worship is Thursday, April 13th at 7:00 following a dinner in Fellowship Hall at 6:30. Nursery care will be available for babies and toddlers. Celebrate the Last Supper of Jesus through hand washing and communion. This is a great multi-sensory service for the entire family.
Good Friday Worship is Friday, April 14th at 7:00. Nursery care will be available for children. Come and learn about the final moments of Christ’ life and his death on the cross. This is traditionally a somber service. Child care will be open to all children, however, this is an important part of the Easter story and helps children understand the excitement that follows on Easter so are encouraged to attend worship. A large part of the service will be led by the choirs.
The Easter Eggstravaganza is Saturday, April 15th from 9:00-11:00. Come and join us as a family for games, crafts, and treats. An egg hunt will happen at 10:00. Please bring a basket. If it is rainy all activities will be inside. If it is sunny the egg hunt will be outside but crafts will be inside. If you would like to help hide eggs Saturday morning at 8:00 please let Erica know.
Easter Sunday Worship is Sunday, April 16th at 6:30, 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00. The morning begins with a sunrise service in the memorial garden followed by a breakfast. There will be nursery and preschool Sunday School classes that morning at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 as usual. A children’s worship time will be held at 9:30 for Elementary children. Drop off will be in room 208, as usual. Middle and High School youth (and Elementary children at 11:00) are to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection with their families in worship.
