Music Ministry

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your name is great and Your heart is kind,
For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing, ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name,
Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

(“Ten Thousand Reasons,” Matt Redman)

High caliber music in a variety of styles is central to our worship life here at Severna Park United Methodist Church. Our Music Ministry provides an excellent opportunity to offer and develop your musical talents, whether that means singing with a worship team, choir or small ensemble, playing an instrument or providing solos for worship or other special occasions. The Music Ministry also is a place of intentional support and spiritual growth, offering participants opportunities to eat, laugh, pray and share life together beyond the practice rooms and Sanctuary.

Worship Bands/Teams: SPUMC’s 9:15am Contemporary Service is led by a worship team each week. Singers and instrumentalists practice weekly to help lead worship in various configurations. If you sing or play guitar, bass, keys, or drums we are always looking for new participants and back-ups. Because volunteers rotate, this is a flexible service opportunity that can fit your schedule. For more information, please contact Meg Moore.

Sanctuary Choir: Our adult choir provides musical leadership for the 10:45 traditional worship service. We enjoy singing a varied repertoire, including classical, spirituals, contemporary anthems, and special musical offerings for the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Weekly rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. in the choir room.  For more information, please contact Laura Young, Director of Music.

Handbell Choir: Our ringers rehearse weekly on Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.  We share music in the 10:45 worship service regularly, especially during the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter seasons. If you have ever participated in choir, band, orchestra or piano lessons, you are uniquely prepared to learn handbells.  We have room to grow several more octaves.  Interested? For more information, please contact Laura Young, Director of Music.

Children’s Music: We incorporate a joyful singing time (Spark Song) at the beginning of our K-5 elementary Sunday School classes. Sign-in by 9:15 at the all-purpose room where all of the elementary students gather. After our whole-group time there, the teachers will take them to their classrooms. The music is coordinated with the lesson themes in order to enhance the learning experience for our students. There will be opportunities for our kids to share their music in worship several times throughout the year.
In addition, our Vacation Bible School kids sing each summer at a special service following VBS week, and children from the Severna Park United Methodist Nursery School present special programs during the year.
For more information, please contact Laura Young, Director of Music or Erica Benjamin, Children’s Ministry.

Middle and High School: Teenagers interested in participating in one of the church musical groups, or providing special music during a service are invited to talk to Laura Young (for the traditional services) or Meg Moore (for the contemporary service).  Your talents are appreciated!

Vocalists and Instrumentalists: We regularly feature soloists and vocal or instrumental ensembles in our morning worship services. If you play an instrument, or are an experienced singer, we’d love to talk with you about sharing your talents!
