#1 ON HOLY GROUND
“We are standing on holy ground, and I know that there are angels all around…” we sang in our opening medleys at our 8am & 10:30am services this past Sunday as we kicked off our August worship series, On Holy Ground. Rev. Ron preached on the story of Moses at the burning bush and pointed out that God spoke to him only once he had gotten his attention and that God continues to speak to us through our own “burning bushes” — and they are all around us when we slow down long enough to look. He also shared a famous quote from the well-known American naturalist, John Muir:

“Hiking – I don’t like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains – not hike! Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, “A la sainte terre,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not ‘hike’ through them.”

When he gave the benediction, Rev. Ron sent worshipers out to saunter, not hike, through their weeks!

#2 ASP 40 BIG CELEBRATION
Join us as we celebrate 40 years of service with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) this coming Sunday, August 14! Worship all morning will include a sharing of the work we accomplished on five homes plus stories of how this trip made a difference for the families we worked for as well as our volunteers. THEN…join us for an authentic ASP Lunch starting at 11:30 am — peanut butter with or without jelly, ham with or without cheese, chips, and watermelon — PLUS our treat of the year: “Cheesecake on a Stick!”  Anyone who has ever been on ASP is welcome to a FREE Anniversary shirt, as long as your size lasts. We had an excellent week of service and want to share it with you. Plan to be present on August 14!

# 3 FALL GARAGE SALE SURVEY
We’d LOVE for you to tell us what you think about the Fall Garage Sale and that will help our leaders determine how we best move forward with this long-time cherished SPUMC tradition. We are surveying the congregation to gauge the feasibility of holding a full-scale Garage Sale on October 1st. Click here to share your thoughts and let us know whether you are willing and available to help out the week of (prep) and/or day of the sale. We need lots of volunteers to make this happen and it will take a church-wide effort and lots of new people to step forward. Thanks in advance.

#4 BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS
On Sunday, August 28 in all services, we will bless all students and teachers as they prepare to return to school. Whether it’s a daycare diaper bag, a preschool tote, an elementary, teenage or college student backpack, or a teacher tote, bring your bag to worship and we will bless it and you!

At 9am, children will go to Sunday School after the blessing.

#5 ALL PICNIC & ROAD TRIP
The Adults Loving Life group will host an INDOOR PICNIC on Wednesday, August 24 at Noon with everyone’s favorite, Mission BBQ, providing the catering. Singer/guitarist Jerry Colley will be on hand to entertain us with his Musical Variety Show. There will be a patriotic theme so wear your red, white, and blue. Make reservations by calling 410-647-5914 (deadline is August 21). And save the date of December 7 for a BUS TRIP to the American Music Theatre for “Home for the Holidays” with lunch at Shady Maple Smorgasbord.
