Want to be part of a vibrant church that approaches worshiping God with reverence, joy, and imagination?  Severna Park United Methodist Church a 1,400 member congregation in Severna Park, MD is looking for a talented musician with a committed faith and a creative team player who can help cultivate and draw out excellence in unpaid musicians while making it fun and building Christian community.

Our new Director of Music will direct and conduct our adult and children’s choirs, handbell choir and instrumental ensembles, and oversee the broader Music Ministry. The Director of Music will engage people of all ages through a variety of musical styles and genres.  Formal, collegiate-level training in choral conducting is preferred.  



  • Direct Adult Choir, Handbell Choir and Children’s Choir 
  • Plan music for two traditional worship services from a variety of genres, according to liturgical season and preaching themes 
  • Schedule and lead rehearsals that are engaging, spirited and worship-oriented 
  • Work periodically with Worship Team Leader to add chorus to songs in Contemporary service 
  • Plan and direct special programs: cantatas or concerts for Christmas or Easter or other special events, including hiring and conducting instrumentalists or small orchestra as needed 
  • Schedule individual singers and instrumentalists for worship, in coordination with other music staff, including rehearsing when needed
  • Coordinate special music for worship when choir is off-season (ex. summer months) 


  • Plan periodic fellowship opportunities for traditional ensembles (meals, prayer times)
  • Engage with church members and other church groups to build the music ministry 
  • Coordinate the prayer team on Sunday mornings 
  • College Scholarship Program: recruit college students as section leaders 
  • With other music staff, help organize special events such as: Chili Cook Off, S’Music and S’Mores, Coffee House 


  • Collaborate with clergy and staff to plan engaging worship 
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and periodic evening church meetings as needed
  • Communicate weekly music selections /worship elements to administrative staff 
  • Central point of communication for all music staff, pastors and congregation 
  • Prepare and submit annual budget for Music Ministry 
  • Submit, as required, conference reports, newsletter articles or conference reports 
  • Feedback and coordination with AV/Tech Team 


  • Collegiate-level choral and conducting training preferred
  • Experience conducting both choral and instrumental ensembles 
  • Knowledge of vocal techniques 
  • Knowledge of broad range of repertoire, solo and choral 
  • Experience planning/leading creative worship with pastoral team
  • Familiarity with Church Administration 

HOURS PER WEEK: 20-30 (negotiable)

SALARY: 30-55K (based on experience and negotiated hours)
