Safe Sanctuaries at Severna Park UMC

At Severna Park United Methodist Church, we are committed to creating a safe, nurturing environment where all children, youth, and vulnerable adults can grow in faith free from harm. Our Safe Sanctuaries Policy outlines practices and procedures that protect those in our care and provide clear guidelines for volunteers and staff.

Our Commitment to Safety

Grounded in the words of Jesus from Matthew 18, our policy ensures that SPUMC is a place where the spiritual, emotional, and physical safety of young people is a top priority. We believe that protecting our community is a shared responsibility—and an expression of our faith.

Key Elements of Our Policy

  • Volunteer Screening & Training
All adults working with children or youth must:

    • Complete a background check

    • Provide references

    • Participate in Safe Sanctuaries training

  • The “Two by Two” Rule
We require two unrelated adults to be present at all events involving children or youth to ensure accountability and safety.

  • Age Requirement
Volunteers must be at least five years older than the oldest child or youth they supervise.

  • Response to Concerns
Any suspected abuse or misconduct is taken seriously and reported immediately to our pastoral staff. A formal reporting process is in place, including the completion of a "Suspected Incident" form.

  • Annual Review & Training
We revisit our policies each year and offer training opportunities to ensure ongoing awareness and compliance.

Why This Matters

Creating safe spaces allows children and youth to grow in trust, confidence, and faith. It also empowers our volunteers and leaders to serve without fear or uncertainty.

Adult Volunteers: Safe Gatherings

SPUMC, as part of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, has partnered with Safe Gatherings to offer online training and background check services.  Safe Gatherings is an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings. When employees and volunteers are trained to identify potential abusers, recognize the signs of abuse, and know how to handle reporting, they are better equipped to prevent abuse. Please visit Safe Gatherings to complete your forms and training.

Youth Volunteers

Volunteers under 18 years of age complete a separate process, including an application and references. Please start your application process with the Youth Volunteer Application.
