Prison Ministry

“…for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me…
Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to
me.”
Matthew 25:35-40 NRSV

Our church has a thriving prison ministry that includes opportunities to teach, mentor and lead spiritual retreats. We partner with two internationally recognized prison ministry organizations:

Through Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, we regularly donate cases of Bibles and have individuals teaching Bible classes and mentoring inmates in personalized settings at Jennifer Road Detention Center and the Ordnance Road Correctional Center.

Through Kairos Prison Ministry International, SPUMC members help lead six spiritual retreats per year and weekly prayer groups inside the Maryland Correctional Institutions for Women (MCIW) and Men (MCIJ), as well as Jessup Correctional Institution (JCI) in Jessup, MD. You can also support from outside by making posters of Christian encouragement and signing up for 30 minute segments of the weekends’ prayer vigils. You can also support by becoming a team member, helping to lead a retreat inside the prison. Kairos retreats seek to bring Christ’s message of hope and transformation into the prison in tangible ways.
