Laura Young

Director of Music

Laura Young finds great joy in working with church musicians of all ages. Born into a military family, Laura has lived in ten states and traveled through forty-eight, as well as one one territory and seven countries.  Through all of this, music and church provided a steadying constant for everyone in the family.  As a six-year-old child, she decided she wanted to be a musician while sitting and reading on the floor beside the organ pedals while her mother played for “Messiah” rehearsals.

Laura graduated from high school in Alaska, then studied at the University of Oregon, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.  She and her husband, Ty, moved to Texas after marrying, where she taught elementary music while Ty completed his doctoral degree.  Laura worked in music education, early childhood intervention and several part-time church music positions during their time in Texas. Taking advantage of a Master’s program designed for full-time teachers, Laura completed her Master’s Degree in Music Education at Southern Methodist University. While in Texas, they raised their two children, Marin and Christian. Marin and Alex moved to Maryland,  and Christian lives and works in Texas.

Laura and Ty are thrilled to live on Kent Island, enjoying walking on the beach with their dogs, boating, watching wildlife and finally living on the same coast as their extended families. Laura is especially grateful for the opportunity to combine her love of working with church choirs , both vocal and handbells, with the opportunity to continue to work with young children, introducing them to the joy of praising God through music.
